Ganster Vikas Dubey, wanted for the killing of 8 policemen in Kanpur a week ago,was killed in an encounter on Monday, a day after his dramatic arrest in Ujjain, while trying to flee from the custody of Uttar Pradesh police after the Special Task Force (STF) convoy met with an accident on their way back from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur, confirmed Mohit Agarwal, IG, Kanpur.

According to police, 4 policemen were also injured. Media persons, who were following the convoy bringing back gangster Vikas Dubey, were stopped by police in Sachendi area of Kanpur before the encounter around 6.30 am in which the criminal was killed.

The encounter has sparked a fresh debate on whether it was an accident or pre planned murder. “It seemed like Vikas Dubey would be encountered. It is a planned encounter. Vikas Dubey could have unveiled the secrets of big politicians in MP and UP,” P C Sharma, MP Vidhan Sabha member, said, demanding a CBI enquiry into the matter.

Police say he has been a prime accused in some 60 criminal cases in his lifetime, including murders. He was accused of killing a BJP MLA in a police station 20 years ago but was acquitted for lack of evidence.
